Before we begin, let me make one thing perfectly clear: I LOVE WINE. If you’ve read any of my past blog posts, you already knew that.
I also love “Wine Quotes,” those pithy little balls of wisdom or humor that let me know I’m not alone. As a matter of fact, some of the earliest writings ever discovered mention wine.
Imagine that — pre-historic wine quotes!
Take this 5,000 year old panel from ancient Sumeria called the Standard of Ur. It was found in a tomb next to a body which appeared to have been ritually sacrificed! As gruesome as that might seem to some of you, the section of the artifact that the pictured fragment was discovered on, they dubbed “Peace.”
And speaking of ancient wine quotes, I studied Homer in college. Having read and re-read the Odyssey (written around the 8th century BC) countless times, I couldn’t help but notice many references to wine. As annoying as the protagonist Odysseus may have been, he loved his wine therefore I could (somewhat) relate to him!
“It is the wine that leads me on,
the wild wine
that sets the wisest man to sing
at the top of his lungs,
laugh like a fool – it drives the
man to dancing… it even
tempts him to blurt out stories
better never told.”
Aristophanes, the famous playwright born in 444 BC, was a keen observer of man’s folly. As such, he obviously understood and appreciated wine’s superpowers! I love this quote so much I’ve actually used it at the bar, although I said “glass” instead of “beaker.”
In the 1500s, Galileo came along. He was another notorious lover of wine. In fact, so many of his words have become wine quotes I had a hard time choosing among them!
This is a nice meme, but here’s a bonus quote:
“The sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent on it,
can still ripen a bunch of grapes
as if it had nothing else in the universe to do.”
The lowbrow side of me loves cheeky little wine quotes like this one
“I cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food.”
― W.C. Fields
“Drink freely the wine life offers you and don’t worry how much you spill.”
― Marty Rubin
But “highbrow me” loves poetry and well-written prose, which offer these wonderful wine quotes:
“There are thousands of wines that can take over our minds.
Don’t think all ecstasies are the same!”
“I like on the table,
when we’re speaking,
the light of a bottle
of intelligent wine.”
― Pablo Neruda
“He wrote her name in wine.
So she showered his soul in stardust.”
― Hillary Wen
For the record, I feel a little guilty about glossing over Rumi — he deserves much more respect than I’ve given him here.
Do you have a favorite wine quote….or 5? We’d love to read them!
